Pittsburgh's North Hills · Prestige HR Laser System
Laser Hair Removal. In Pittsburgh, PA.
Long-term hair reduction for those tired of the shave-wax-repeat cycle. Always Melissa.
The Approach
Interrupt future growth.
Leave the skin alone.
Laser hair removal uses focused light energy, absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle, to interrupt future growth while leaving the surrounding skin alone. We use the Prestige HR system with built-in cooling, and plan a series matched to your hair and skin. Every treatment is performed by Melissa Kolowitz, PA-C.
Clinical Summary
Laser hair removal uses concentrated light absorbed by pigment in the hair follicle, heating it enough to slow and eventually stop regrowth. Because the laser reads pigment, coarse dark hair on lighter skin responds most predictably, and a series of sessions (typically six or more, spaced several weeks apart) is needed to catch each follicle in its growth phase. At Aetheria Aesthetics & Wellness in Pittsburgh's North Hills, treatment is performed by Melissa Kolowitz, PA-C, beginning with an assessment of your skin type, hair characteristics, medications, and sun habits to set honest expectations before any commitment. Sessions are quick (small areas take minutes) with brief redness afterward and strict sun protection between visits. Lighter, finer, and gray hair responds less, and Melissa will say so plainly if laser is not your best option. Candidacy is confirmed at consultation. Individual results vary.
Hair pigment absorbs light.
Laser hair removal works because hair pigment absorbs light. Each pulse sends light energy down the hair shaft to the follicle, where it converts to heat and disables the follicle's ability to regrow, while continuous cooling protects the surrounding skin. One session only reaches the hairs in their active growth phase, which is a fraction of the total at any moment. That is why laser hair removal is planned as a series, typically six to eight sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, so each visit catches a new cycle of active follicles. The Prestige HR system offers adjustable settings for a range of skin types and hair colors.
Start Your AssessmentHow Laser Hair Removal Works
One thing, done very well.
Precise by Design
Light energy is absorbed by the pigment in the follicle, leaving the surrounding skin undisturbed.
Built-In Cooling
The Prestige HR cools the skin continuously while it works, keeping sessions comfortable.
Long-Term Reduction
Disabled follicles stop producing hair, so regrowth typically becomes finer and sparser across the series.
Quick Sessions
Most areas take 15 to 30 minutes, with no downtime afterward.
"The laser does one thing very well: it turns light into heat inside the hair follicle. Timing the series to your hair growth cycle is what turns that into lasting reduction."
Where Laser Hair Removal Works Best
Any area you routinely shave, wax, or pluck.
Upper Lip and Chin
Fine facial areas where shaving and waxing irritate and regrow fastest.
Underarms
A small, quick area where patients feel the day-to-day payoff most.
Bikini Line
Smoother results in an area prone to ingrown hairs and razor irritation.
Legs
The largest routine-shaving area, treated in sessions of about 30 minutes.
Back and Shoulders
Broad areas that are hard to maintain on your own.
Arms and Other Areas
Most facial and body areas with pigmented hair can be planned into a series.
"These are the areas patients bring to Aetheria most often."
Candidacy
Who this is for.
You're probably a great candidate if:
You are ready to stop managing unwanted hair and want a longer-term answer. You shave, wax, or pluck a facial or body area on a regular basis, or get ingrown hairs and irritation from shaving and waxing. Your hair has enough pigment for the laser to act on (most colors other than white, gray, and some very light blonde or red). You can commit to a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart, and are willing to limit sun exposure around treatments when advised.
Let's talk first if:
Because the laser works through pigment, very light or gray hair responds less. Melissa confirms whether your hair and skin combination is a good match at consultation. Individual results vary.
"If this isn't the right tool, we'll say so."
A note from Melissa
Always Melissa. Same settings logic, every visit.
The freedom from daily shaving or monthly waxing is what patients talk about most. A well-planned series, timed to your hair growth cycle, is what makes that freedom last.
Laser hair removal results depend on correct settings for your skin and hair, consistent spacing timed to the growth cycle, and honest guidance about what the laser can and cannot do for your hair type. That is how every laser plan is built at Aetheria.
The plan you agree on at consultation is the one I carry out.

Your sessions are performed by a PA-C, not handed off. Always Melissa. Same provider, same settings logic, every visit.

Energy and pulse settings tuned to your skin tone and hair, not a one-size preset.
A series on schedule
Sessions are timed to your growth cycle, because cadence is half the result.
Honest fit assessment
If your hair color or skin will not respond well, Melissa will tell you before you commit.
Your Laser Hair Removal Visit
From first conversation to maintenance.
Consultation.
Melissa reviews your hair, skin tone, and goals, confirms laser is a good match, and maps the number of sessions. About 30 minutes, with no pressure to treat the same day.
Your session.
You will feel a light snapping or warming sensation as the laser pulses, moderated by continuous cooling. Most areas take 15 to 30 minutes.
Recovery.
Mild redness or sensitivity can appear for a few hours. Most patients return to normal activities immediately and simply protect the area from direct sun.
Results and series.
Treated hairs shed over the following weeks and regrowth typically comes in finer and sparser. Sessions repeat every four to six weeks, with occasional maintenance once or twice a year.
What patients say
In their words.
Melissa did a wonderful job listening to my goals and helping me determine what services were right for me. She could have easily convinced me to do more, but she was honest and only suggested what I truly needed.
Had a wonderful consultation with the owner, Melissa. She took her time and walked me through all her services and answered my questions without trying to oversell me.
Common Questions
Straight answers.
What patients ask before booking.
How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?
Most patients see the full result over six to eight sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. The laser only reaches hairs in their active growth phase, which is a fraction of the total at any time, so the series is what catches them all. Many people notice reduced growth after the first visit. Melissa maps a realistic plan for your area and hair at consultation. Individual results vary.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Most people describe a light snapping, like a small rubber-band flick, with a brief warming feeling. The Prestige HR cools the skin continuously while it works, which keeps sessions comfortable for the large majority of patients. Sensitive areas like the upper lip or bikini line can feel a bit sharper for a moment. No numbing is required, and any redness usually settles within hours.
How should I prepare for a laser session?
Shave the area a day or so before your visit, since the energy should reach the follicle rather than hair above the skin. Skip waxing and plucking for several weeks beforehand, because they remove the pigment the laser acts on. Limit sun and self-tanner around your sessions when advised. Melissa reviews the specifics for your skin and area at consultation, so you arrive ready.
Does laser hair removal work on all skin tones and hair colors?
The Prestige HR offers adjustable settings that make treatment effective and safe across most skin tones, and Melissa tunes those settings to you. Hair color matters more: the laser acts on pigment, so darker hair responds best, while white, gray, and some very light blonde or red hair respond less. If your combination is not a good match, Melissa will say so honestly at consultation.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
The honest answer is long-term reduction rather than zero hair forever. Follicles that are fully disabled do not regrow hair, and most patients see a dramatic, lasting reduction after a completed series. Hormones and time can activate new follicles, which is why occasional maintenance once or twice a year is common. Individual results vary, and Melissa sets expectations clearly at consultation.
